Going IndieBound: What Does That Mean?

Up to this point in my blogging career, I have reviewed and written about many books, but never have I linked to a bookseller. The purpose of my blog is to discuss books, not to sell them. My blog’s purpose has not changed, and neither will the fair and honest eye I try to bring to literary discussion.

I have elected to become an affiliate for IndieBound, an organization that brings together independent bookstores and supports local businesses. In a world where wealth is so stratified, I consider it my responsibility as a book blogger not to link to Amazon, a company headed by Jeff Bezos, currently the wealthiest man in the world with a net worth of over one hundred billion dollars. Instead, I choose to affiliate myself with a company whose purpose is to connect readers with local bookstores.

As an affiliate, though, I will in a technical sense be “selling books” through my blog. Here’s how it works: when I write about a book that is available through IndieBound, I will link to where you can find it on their website. That link is a specialized link. When you follow a link from my blog to buy a book, you will pay the exact amount for it that you would otherwise, but I will gain a commission fee from it. That’s it!

I’m not trying to sell you anything. I encourage you to only buy books that you are interested in buying. My reviews will not be polished up in hopes of convincing people to buy a book that I didn’t like.

That being said, if you are a friend or acquaintance of mine, or if you simply want to help support me, here’s what you can do. The next time you want to buy a book, contact me (through my contact page or otherwise) and I will send you a specialized link for that book. You buy a book that you were going to buy anyway, support local business, and send a bit of money my way in one fell swoop. Three birds with one stone!
